CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. — Award-winning actress Meryl Streep has donated 5,000 new books to Segue Institute for Learning, a middle school in Central Falls.
Earlier this summer, Streep gave a special address at Carnegie Hall to teens who received national awards in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. In appreciation, Scholastic Inc. offered to donate books to the charity of Streep’s choice.
Streep chose Segue. It wasn’t the first time she’s helped the school. In February, Streep donated $10,000 to Segue in honor of Central Falls native and fellow actress Viola Davis and Davis’ sister, Dolores Davis Grant.
Fellow Academy Award winner Davis had introduced Streep to Segue and mentioned that the school was in dire need of a new building.
